How to Answer "Tell Me About Yourself"

"Tell me about yourself" opens most interviews — and it's a trap if you ramble through your life story. It's really asking: why are you a good fit for this role? Here's how to answer in under two minutes.

Use the Present–Past–Future formula

Present: Start with your current role and a headline strength.

"I'm a marketing coordinator focused on content and email, and over the last two years I've grown our newsletter from 5k to 30k subscribers."

Past: Briefly connect the experience that led here and is relevant to this job.

"Before that I was in social media, which is where I learned how much I enjoy turning data into campaigns that convert."

Future: End with why you're here, now, for this role.

"I'm looking to take that into a role with more ownership of strategy, which is exactly what excited me about this position."

What to keep out

• Your full chronological history
• Personal details unrelated to the job
• Negativity about a current/past employer
• "Umm, what do you want to know?"

Tips that make it land

• Keep it to 90 seconds. Practise out loud until it's natural, not memorised.
• Tailor the middle to echo the role's key requirements.
• End on enthusiasm for this specific company.
